Adjustable Punch

This punch is relatively adjustable to provide a desired stamping action on workpieces. The distance between the center of a driving mechanism and the bottom of a punch is not changed at changing pressure settings.

Bracket 20 ties together upper housing 22 and lower housing 24 for enclosing punch element 26. Housings 22 and 24 are internally threaded with like threads to receive adjusting screw 28 which is externally threaded. Rotation of the spacer section changes the spring 32 tension. Lock nuts 30 retain screw 28 in place after the desired tension is attained. Spring 32 encircles punch element 26 and is contained by an internal shoulder 34 of element 26 and flange 36 on adjusting screw 28. The bias is a preload for the element 26 period. The rack member is attached to the exterior of the housing and engages a gear to provide a pressure indication. A dial member is associated with the gear to provide the display of the stamping pressure.

A ram is suitably attached to element 26 to raise and lower such element against and with the biasing element.

After assembly of the punch, the housing is fastened to the ram and the ram down position of the punch is adjusted to the permissible breakaway of the punch shoulder from the retainer section in the lower housing.
