Dimpling Tool

Apparatus 1 is for crimping covers such as cap 2, finned for heat exchange purposes, onto substrates such as the pinned module 3.

Apparatus 1 includes base support 4 annularly recessed at 5 and 6 to define, about an annular guide portion 9, peripheral shoulder 7 and suitably recessed central support section 8 for seating module 3.

Formed in portion 9 are radial recessed guide slots 10. In the latter are slidably mounted die blocks 11 formed with crimping tips 12 for dimpling side walls 28 of cap 1 into retentive relationship beneath module 3.

Shoulder 7 of base 4 is further annularly recessed to form a peripheral guide way 15. In the latter is slidably mounted annular drive ring 13 for rotational movement concentrically, about portion 9, by drive ram 14 reciprocally driven by suitable mechanism not shown. Ring 13 is retained in guide way 15 by annular retainer ring 16 secured to the unrecessed portions of shoulder 7 by fasteners
17.

Radially recessed in ring 13 are drive slots 18 for slidable mounting of drive blocks 19. The latter are fixedly attached to adjustable stops 20 for controlling the drive excursion of die blocks 11. Drive blocks 19 are retained in drive slots 18 by outer cover plate 21. This is radially slotted along at portions 22 to accommodate reciprocating travel of the extended portion of pivot pins 23 pivotally mounting drive links 24 to drive blocks 19. The other ends of drive links 24 are pivotally mounted by another group of piv...
