Abstract

The apparatus converts a constant rotary motion from an input to a combined rotary indexing and axially reciprocating motion in output shaft 2. Shaft 1, with either a constant or variable speed input, drives shaft 3 through bevel gears 4. Shaft 3 drives cam 5 which in turn moves shaft 2 in a controlled vertically reciprocating output motion.

The apparatus converts a constant rotary motion from an input to a combined rotary indexing and axially reciprocating motion in output shaft 2. Shaft 1, with either a constant or variable speed input, drives shaft 3 through bevel gears 4. Shaft 3 drives cam 5 which in turn moves shaft 2 in a controlled vertically reciprocating output motion.

Input shaft 1 also turns Geneva driver 6 which in turn indexes Geneva 7. With the latter keyed to shaft 2, a rotary indexing motion is thus imparted to shaft
2. The latter is also split and coupled together at 8 so that the lower portion of shaft 2 does not rotate but allows the shaft to be driven vertically by cam 5.

Extreme accuracy of output location of motions can be held. This is effected by timing the reciprocating motion to occur when the Geneva is in a rest position and when there is a close slip fit at surface 9 of Geneva 7 and Geneva driver 6.
