Abstract

The sample collector is for gathering samples from a surface such as a planet. The collector comprises a prestressed strip of metal which can be coiled in flat, compact form. When allowed to relax, the metal strip assumes a tubular shape. Reel 1, having strip 2 coiled on it, is moved across surface 3 of the planet to be studied. As reel 1 moves, strip 2 is unreeled and contacts surface 3. Strip 2 closes upon itself such that its edges 4 and 5 close downwardly and inwardly, so as to scrape surface material 6 and enclose it within the now formed tube 7. This scraping action shown by cross-sections of strip 2 at times T1, T2, T3, and T4. Once strip 2 is completely unreeled and assumes its tubular shape, it is rewound onto reel 8, soil samples 6 falling on a collection tray not shown.
