Abstract

This system is useful for controlling tension in a web transport system and is capable of handling webs of various widths. Box 2 is divided by adjustable plate 4 into vacuum column portion 6 and vacuum plenum portion 8. Plate 4 is adjustable to vary the width of column 6 and includes resilient runner 10 and flexible boot 12. These allow adjustment of the plate while maintaining an air-tight relationship between column 6 and portion 8. Openings 14 at the bottom of plate 4 allow for pressure adjustment and communication between column 6 and portion 8. The top portion of the latter is maintained in a closed air-tight condition by movable plate 16 which is connected to adjustable plate 4.

In operation, the to-be-controlled web is brought into proximity with the upper open portion of column 6. A vacuum source is activated, causing portion 8 and connected column 6 to be exhausted. The reduction in pressure in column 6 causes web 18 to be forced into column 6 by external air pressure. The relationship between the width of web 18 and the width of column 6 is such as to maintain a substantially airtight seal between the edge of web 18 and the sides of the column 6. The depth of the web loop within column 6 is controlled by standard switching or sensing devices not shown.

As webs of greater or lesser width are to be controlled by this system, plate 4 is moved to maintain the width of column 6 at the prop++ tolerances with respect to the web.
