Connectors

These flexible strip transmission lines are used tape-to-board connectors. The structures shown form pluggable connectors for flexible strip transmission lines. Their purpose is to connect tape strip lines to a board with desired high- contact pressure and maintain good transmission line characteristics.

In A, signal line 1, spaced from ground plane 2 by dielectric 3, is terminated by contact button 4. Spring 5, connected at its one end plane 2 and terminated in contact button 6, provides a resilient conductive path between ground planes 2 and plane 7. The latter is disposed on the surface of board 8 on which circuits, not shown, are disposed. Signal land 9, also disposed on the surface of board 8, carries a signal from line 1 to the circuits which are connected to land 9. Pressure block 10 applies pressure to spring 5 to insure wiping of contact areas and good electrical connections.

In B, ground plane 2 extends past dielectric 3 and is terminated in contact button 11. Spring 5, in this arrangement, transmits pressure from pressure block 10 to achieve good contact. Wipe of the contact areas in B is also achieved if spring 5 is bonded to plane 2 at the points of contact. Elastomer block 12, shown in dotted lines, can replace spring 5. Wiping action can be obtained by shaping pressure block 10 and block 12. Alignment of the connector is attained by pins, not shown, which pass through holes in dielectric 3 and plane 2.
