Abstract

By simultaneous deposition of Eu and Gd(2)O(3) on a heated substrate of glass or quartz in a vacuum of 10/-6/Torr., a compound is formed with beneficial characteristics for a beam addressable memory. The evaporation rates of Eu and Gd(2)O(3) are controlled to give an approximate ratio of Eu/Gd(2)O(3) = 1.5/1.0. The X-ray diffraction results show the presence of three well-defined peaks as follows:. d - 2.976 corresponds to EuO 111 d - 3.184 not identified (d) - 2.576 corresponds to EuO 200.

A ferromagnetic and magneto-optic compound of Eu metal is chemically reacted with Gd(2)O(3) in a vacuum system to form a thin-film structure. The two components Eu and Gd(2)O(3) are controlled to give an approximate ratio of Eu/Gd(2)O(3) = 1.5/1.0. The magnetic moment measured at 7 degrees K is 800 emu/cc at an applied field of 5000 Oe.

As in the case of EuO films, there is a strong magneto-optic effect. For example, in the transverse Kerr effect, the maximum effect occurs at wavelength of 5500 Angstroms with an intensity modulation of + 12 per cent and at 8000 Angstroms with an intensity modulation of -2.5 per cent. The cross-over occurs at 7000 Angstroms.

In one application, there is light beam modulation of amplitude. A light beam is reflected off the surface of the compound.
