Abstract

This cutting apparatus trims the edge of tape, strips or other sheet material to straighten such edge. Present tape or strip slitting equipment does not produce a sufficiently straight edge. Hence, this cutting apparatus accurately cuts into edge 10 of strip 11 as it is advanced longitudinally through the cutting station. The cutting apparatus comprises cutter 12 and cutting block 13. Cutter 12 has a curved cutting profile and is positioned so that its axis 14 is slightly above the face of block 13. Thus the teeth of cutter 12 are nearly parallel to face 15 of block 13. This produces a shearing action with no side force to deflect strip 11. One adjustment 16 is provided to advance block 13 into cutter 12, so such cutter cuts into block 13 and produce a sharp cutting edge.

11. One adjustment 16 is provided to advance block 13 into cutter 12, so such cutter cuts into block 13 and produce a sharp cutting edge. Another adjustment 17 is provided to adjust the lateral position of cutter 12 and block 13 as a unit to control the depth of cut. Additionally, an elongated guide accurately aligns strip 11 with the cutting apparatus.
