Abstract

Pluggable circuit module 12 has short, small diameter, closely spaced pins 14 extending from one side and is adapted to plug into circuit board 16. Elastic member 18 is located on the surface of module 12 opposite pins 14. The thickness of member 18 is dependent on the mechanical properties required and other packaging considerations.

Pluggable circuit module 12 has short, small diameter, closely spaced pins 14 extending from one side and is adapted to plug into circuit board 16. Elastic member 18 is located on the surface of module 12 opposite pins 14. The thickness of member 18 is dependent on the mechanical properties required and other packaging considerations.

Board 16, to which module 12 is to be connected, has relatively thick, soft, precious metal conductive pads 20. The latter are located in positions to intercept pins 14 of module 12. Board 16 has guide member 22 attached over it which provides stiffness for such board and includes grid holes 24 through which pins 14 of module 12 are guided onto pads 20. Molded honeycomb structure 26 is bonded to board 16 via member 22. Structure 26 includes a separate cell 28 for receiving each module 12 and includes a locking arrangement consisting of alternate facing locking ears 30 associated with cells 28. Ears 30 provide the restraint to members 18 of the respective circuit modules.

A module 12 is inserted into a cell 28 of structure 26 and is located in position by a mechanical keying arrangement. Rigid compression plate 32 fits over member 18 and by means of which member 18 is compressed sufficiently so that ears 30 snap over plate 32, thus maintaining the compression force on member 18 and module 12 to which it is connected.
