Abstract

This tape reel is assembled from a hub and a pair of flanges all made from normally the same plastic material and all are united by ultrasonic welding. Hub 51 is provided with a circular array of arcuate slots 53 passing through such hub. Flanges 61 and 71 have corresponding lugs 63 and 73 adapted to enter slots 53 with a slight clearance. One set of lugs 63 has pointed ridges 69 at the ends of the lugs and the lugs are such that, when in slots 53, the combined flanges clear the hub by approximately the depth of ridges 69. The assembly is formed on a work table and ultrasonic vibration is imparted to lugs 63 and 73 to melt the material of the ridges and weld the lugs to the side walls of slots 53.
