Abstract

Undesirable noise, created by the escape of air used for pressurizing moving magnetic belts, is reduced or eliminated by venting at the edges of the bearing. In an electromagnetic transfer process, data on master tape 12 is transferred to slave tape 14. In the process, tapes 12 and 14 pass through a throat formed between bearing members 20 and 21. One member 20 is shown in end elevation and member 21 is shown in cross-section. The electromagnetic transducer arrangement is omitted.

Undesirable noise, created by the escape of air used for pressurizing moving magnetic belts, is reduced or eliminated by venting at the edges of the bearing. In an electromagnetic transfer process, data on master tape 12 is transferred to slave tape 14. In the process, tapes 12 and 14 pass through a throat formed between bearing members 20 and 21. One member 20 is shown in end elevation and member 21 is shown in cross-section. The electromagnetic transducer arrangement is omitted.

It is essential that the tapes be pressed together tightly. To this end, air under pressure is conveyed by conduits 24 into chambers 26 in the interior of members 20 and 21. This air escapes through a series of orifices 28 spaced along the transverse dimension of both members 20 and 21 to press tapes 12 and 14 together. The escaping air vents into the atmosphere at the outer edges of members 20 and 21. A whistling noise is then set up and, in addition, flutter can be set up in tapes 12 and 14 which augments the noise much in the manner of a vibrating reed horn.

This noise is overcome by venting the escaping air through apertures 30. The latter are spaced transversely in the same way as are orifices 28. Chambers 32 serve as sinks for the depressurizing of the air between members 20 and 21.
