Tape Cassette

The cassette stores an endless magnetic tape whose start position is indicated by transparent section 10 spliced into the tape.

The cassette is shown with pressure pad holder 12 slid forward out of the cassette structure. Also a top guiding member on holder 12 is removed. This top guide member provides lateral guiding flanges at the top of holder 12 just as flanges 16 do for the bottom of holder 12. Also mounted on holder 12 is pressure pad 18 and pressure roller 20.

In a normal operating position, the back of holder 12 abuts against walls 22 of the tape storage cavity. In this position, roller 20 presses the tape against feed roller 24. The pressure between rollers 20 and 24 is controlled by tension screw 26 at the opposite end of holder 12. Screw 26 pushes the holder 12 assembly to the left so that pressure between rollers 20 and 24 can be adjusted. The holder 12 assembly is held slidably against walls 22 by screws. These pass through holes 30 with a slight amount of play so that adjustment of screw 26 changes the pressure between rollers 20 and 24.

The structure of holder 12 has several advantages. First, roller 20 is made from TEFLON* so as not to collect dirt. Second, holder 12 has stripper 32 molded in it. Stripper 32 forms a blade surface very close to the surface of roller 20 so that as the tape is driven past such roller, it is stripped off and into the tape holding cavity without wedging between roller 20 and holder 12.
