Word selection matrix 10 comprises plural, cylindrical, magnetic drive elements 11 arranged in a two-dimensional row and column array. Each element 11 comprises a cylindrical magnetic Ni-Fe film 12 deposited on a cylindrical conductive substrate 13. Film 12 is uniaxially anisotropic with its easy axis 14 in a circumferential direction. Insulated word select conductors Y1...Yn are threaded through substrates 13 of elements 11 in each row. Bias windings X1...Xn having one or more turns are wound around elements 11 for each column.

Word-organized storage device 15 comprises plural cylindrical magnetic storage elements 16 arranged in a two-dimensional row and column array. Each element 16 comprises a uniaxial anisotropic magnetic film 17 deposited on a conductive substrate 18. The easy axes 19 of films 17 are longitudinal. Word lines 20 connect substrates 18 of each element 16 with substrates 13 of corresponding elements 11. Drive and storage elements 11 and 16, respectively, are mounted on a common support structure and are very closely positioned causing high noise signal interferences on lines 20. To eliminate this noise, lines 20 for each drive-storage element combination are cross-connected. In this manner, the net flux coupled into magnetic drive element-memory word loop 20 is zero. Bit-sense windings 21 are orthogonally wound around elements 16 that are connected to sense amplifier devices and bit drivers not shown.

For selecting and switching a desired element 16, a current is supplied in a first direction to the desired X-winding to produce an orthogonal or hard axis field to cause the magnetization of elements 11 in the selected column to rotate slightly from the easy first bistable state. Following a time delay to permit any noise signals to decay on lines 20, a second directional current pulse is applied to the selected Y-line.
