Abstract

The typewriter has selectively settable left margin stops that are removable. Typewriter 1, at A, has print head 2 mounted on carrier 3 and is operable to print on document 4 carried by platen 5. Tab stops 6, 7, and 8 are settable to control tabulation to the right. Margin rack 9 carries left margin stop 10 which determines the beginning of lines for paragraph A on document 4. Rack 9 also carries three removable stops 11, 12, and 13 that are selectively set for indentation control. Stops 11 and 13 are set for paragraphs B and C respectively. Stop 12 is clear. Stop 11, at B, is also representative of stops 12 and 13, and includes a plastic keybutton 14 and latch 15 pivoted at 16. Latch 15 holds stop 11 on rack 9 and is depressed to unlatch stop 11 for removal.

Margin Indent Mechanism

Carrier 3 mounts bracket 17 with clear lug 18, set lug 19, and margin stop latch 20. To set it, carrier 3 is spaced so that set lug 19 is opposite stop tab 21, rack 9 is rotated by solenoid 22 as indicated by arrow 23, and tab 21 moves from the clear condition indicated by dashed line 24 to the set condition shown. This can be arranged to occur automatically during typing upon occurrence of a tab operation to indicate initiation of a new paragraph. As each stop is set, those to the left remain set. To clear tab 21, the same procedure is followed with solenoid 25 rotating rack 9 in the direction of arrow 26. Tab 21 encounters clear lug 18. When rack 9 restores, tab 21 assumes the dashe...
