Print Element Position Indicator

The position of the print element of a single element typewriter 10 is indicated by a series of numerical indicating wheels 11...13 of a mechanical counter. The counter is located in a recess in the keyboard area of the typewriter. A removable transparent cover 14 is provided to permit manual setting of the counter.

Transport cable 15 is connected for movement with the print element carrier and extends along pulley 16. Bevel gear 17, on one side of pulley 16, meshes with bevel gear 18. The latter is attached to shaft 19 carrying sprocket wheel 20. A perforated drive tape extends about sprocket 20 and an additional sprocket wheel 21 which provides the driving input to wheels 11...13 of the counter. This is set to zero when the print element is located at the left margin position. The numerical indication registered by the counter shows the printing position of the print element relative to the left margin.

When the printing pitch of the typewriter is changed, lever 25 is pivoted counterclockwise about pivot pin 26. This raises shaft 19 against the resistance of biasing coil spring 27 by a distance sufficient to disengage gears 17 and 18. The vertical movement of shaft 19 also results in meshing of a second set of bevel gears 28.and 29. This set has a ratio different from the set of gears 17 and 18 so that the counter records a numerical indication of the position of the print element corresponding to the selected printing pitch.
