Abstract

This apparatus turns a train of articles moving longitudinally through an angle about the axis of the articles so that the latter are presented in a diagonal disposition. Square articles such as semiconductor microelectronic circuit modules 10 are normally handled in trays or other conveying structures. These have a plurality of channels 11 in which the modules are arranged in longitudinal trains as in drawing A. For certain processing steps, such as tinning, which the modules are dipped into solder, it is desirable to mount the modules by their diagonal corners. The modules are to be mounted in a module holder having a plurality of paired flexible fingers 12. Each of these has an aperture 13 in which a diagonal corner of the module is seated as in drawing B.

The modules are to be mounted in a module holder having a plurality of paired flexible fingers 12. Each of these has an aperture 13 in which a diagonal corner of the module is seated as in drawing B. In order to turn the trains of modules in channels 11 through an angle of 45 Degrees, the modules are fed gravitationally into a series of channels 14 which turn through the desired angle, e.g., 45 Degrees. The modules are thus turned through an angle of 45 Degrees and come to rest in a series of two-pin nests 15 at the ends of channel 14.

The modules are thus presented in a diagonal disposition and can be readily picked up by the module holder which moves into engagement with the modules retained in nests 15.
