Abstract

This valve permits pressure control in a vacuum system, backfilled with a gas, and protects the high vacuum pump. In use, it controls the opening of the pumping port, thus controlling the volume of gas reaching the pump. Butterfly valve 20 is suitably placed between the chamber and high vacuum pump. Valve seat 22 is stepped about its circumference. Half the valve seat requires the valve to rotate toward the chamber, the other half requires it to rotate away from the chamber. The valve seat construction permits the valve to close and maintain a high pressure in the chamber without flooding the pump. With a fixed gas input, the valve can be closed to a set angle and maintain a fixed pressure in the chamber. This can be accomplished by automatic pressure control devices and fully automated.
