Abstract

The IBM SELECTRIC* Composer incorporates a display device. This indicates at the end of each trial line of typing both the disparity between the line and the preset length and the number of interword spaces which have been typed. The display is in a form which represents the setting to which the value dial and the quantity dial on the Composer are manually set before retyping. The manual settings once entered ensure that the Composer acts automatically to amplify the interword spaces appropriately for justification of that line.

Margin Adjuster

The IBM SELECTRIC* Composer incorporates a display device.

This indicates at the end of each trial line of typing both the disparity between the line and the preset length and the number of interword spaces which have been typed. The display is in a form which represents the setting to which the value dial and the quantity dial on the Composer are manually set before retyping. The manual settings once entered ensure that the Composer acts automatically to amplify the interword spaces appropriately for justification of that line.

Display area 1 is provided on tube 2 which is moved by the carriage of the Composer as it traverses during the typing of the trial line. A pattern of markings 3 on an inner tube can be seen through window 4 in tube 2. The inner tube is rotated in steps once for each interval space included in the trial line of typing to alter the portion of pattern 3 seen. Pattern 3, together with a reading taken from scale 5 extending adjacent window 4, indicates the setting for the two dials after the trial line is typed.

This display device is arranged to enable the right-hand margin to be temporarily altered within a limited range without changing the preset right-hand margin of the Composer. Window 4 is extended to the left and provided with shutter 6 and extension arm 7 which carries scale 5. Reference pointer 8 on shutter 6 cooperates with additional increment scale 9 on tube 2 and for normal justifying operations and is positioned...
