Abstract

This notched cam is employed as a positive safety latch for vertically or horizontally hinged covers or frames containing components which need to be raised from their normal position for servicing. The latch consists of cam member 10 having notch 12 and pivot 14 offset from the center of gravity of member 10. The latch is positioned so that cam surface 16 rides against a moving element of the cover or frame 18, such as its edge or hinge 20. When the cover or frame 18 is fully opened, notch 14 moves into engaging relationship beneath hinge 20 to prevent closing the cover the latch is manually released.
