Abstract

Document registration in a sheet feeding mechanism for serial printing is assured by this registration mechanism. Document 1, driven by slip rolls 2, is arrested by gate 3 and remains in that position until a signal to start printing energizes solenoid 4. Linkage 15, connected to solenoid 4, rotates spring-biased arm 5, fastened to shaft 6, in a counterclockwise direction. Upper arm 7, fastened to shaft 6, applies pressure to the pressure roll arm 8 via spring 9 to drive pressure roll 10 against document 1 and continuously running feed roll 11. After roll 10 engages document 1, spring 9 compresses allowing arm 7 to continue its counterclockwise rotation. At this same time, gate control arm 12 is also being driven toward the feed roll by extended portion 16 on arm 7.

Upper arm 7, fastened to shaft 6, applies pressure to the pressure roll arm 8 via spring 9 to drive pressure roll 10 against document 1 and continuously running feed roll 11. After roll 10 engages document 1, spring 9 compresses allowing arm 7 to continue its counterclockwise rotation. At this same time, gate control arm 12 is also being driven toward the feed roll by extended portion 16 on arm 7. As arm 12 continues its movement toward the feed roll, gate control roller 13, fixed to arm 12, passes the pivot point of the gate allowing the force of the document which is captured between the pressure and feed rolls to open gate 3. De- energization of solenoid 4 at the end of the cycle allows roll 10 to open releasing document 1 which is now under control of eject rolls not shown. When the end of document 1 passes gate 3, spring 14 returns arm 12 to its home position closing gate 3 to stop the next document.
