Molded Tape Head Module

Tape head module 10 is formed from magnetic core and coil assembly 16 and connector block 12 carrying imbedded connector pins 14. The two portions are formed into an integral rigid construction by molded plastic encapsulating material 15.

A plurality of intermediate laminations 18 having a C-shaped configuration forms portions 20, 22 and 24. An outer lamination is comprised of first portion 26, which is coextensive with portion 22 and one end of portion 20, and second portion 28 which is coextensive with portion 24 and the other end of portion 20. Outer laminations 30 and 32, similar to laminations 26 and 28, respectively, are applied to the opposite side of core 16.

The central portion of portion 20 has a thickness which is reduced by the thickness of two laminations from the thickness of portions 22 and 24 of core 16. Furthermore, laminations 18 are narrower than portion 20 of the outer laminations. Lamination 26 is narrower to match the narrower laminations 18. Outer laminations 28 and 32 on portion 24 extend beyond portion 20 to provide a pair of spaced, parallel flanges which are of the same size. An insulating sheath is wrapped around the reduced portion of portion 20 of the C-shaped magnetic core 16. A plurality of turns of insulated wire are prewound to form coil 48.

Connector block 49 is comprised of a molded plastic body having a pair of embedded connector pins 14. The opposite sides of block 49 are provided with channels 56. The...
