Abstract

To tabulate data for printing, a format record containing all tab positions for a single print line is transferred from storage 10 through one-character register 12 to I/O buffer 14. The format record contains tab characters X and spaces S and is recognized by a suitable prefix format character F.

Data Tabulation System

To tabulate data for printing, a format record containing all tab positions for a single print line is transferred from storage 10 through one-character register 12 to I/O buffer 14. The format record contains tab characters X and spaces S and is recognized by a suitable prefix format character F.

Character F is detected by logic circuit 16 when address register 18 stands at 001 to set format latch 20. Each time a tab character is detected by decoding circuit 22, a tab bit is stored in register 24 containing an extra bit position. Storage address register 26 for storage 14 restores the bit to the storage position in an extra bit plane provided for this purpose. Space characters from store 10 are stored as such in storage 14 in successive locations.

In entering data from storage 10, latch 20 is reset. Each time a tab character X is detected in the data by decoder 16, tab search latch 28 is turned on and sets a fast load latch 30 which increments register 26 and inserts space characters at these locations. When a tab bit from the format record is detected in register 24, latch 30 is reset and a signal is conveyed to register 18 to bring another character into storage 14 at the storage position containing the format tab character.

Data characters from the data record are then transferred to successive storage locations in storage 14 until another tab character is detected in data.

The lower drawing shows a format record and two data records.
