Multichannel Light Deflection System

The selection and projection of characters using light beams in printer and display applications are described in U.S. Reissue Patent No. 26,170. By arranging the selection and projection apparatus in a multichannel deflection system, the character capacity of the system and the resolution of the selected characters are increased.

The selection apparatus and a part of the projection apparatus are arranged in plural channels in this system. Light sources 1 and 2 in the form of low-power lasers provide light beams to the channels. The channels include modulators 3 and 4, polarizers 5 and 6 and multistage light deflectors 7 and 8 for selecting a character from character masks 9 and 10. Each channel includes a second light deflector 11 and 12 for returning the characters selected from either mask 9 or 10 to a common axis 13 with the aid of mirror system 14.

Modulators 3 and 4 respond to driver circuits to permit the light beam, provided by the associated light source, to be transmitted or to be extinguished. Thus, only one channel at a time is provided with a light beam for selection of a character from the mask located in that channel. Deflectors 7 and 8 contain a plurality of stages. One half of the states is oriented to act along one axis.

The other half of the stages is oriented to deflect the light on the orthogonal axis.

For example, each deflectors 7 and 8 can include eight stages, four acting on the X-axis and four on the Y-axis. In this example, the light beams are each capable of selecting any one character from a matrix of 256 characters each contained in masks 9 and 10.
