Abstract

Exhaustion of ink ribbon is indicated by closure of switch 10 to terminate automatic typewriter operation and thus prevent lose of information. A typewriter having a ribbon feed mechanism like that described in IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin, Vol. 6, No. 4, pages 17 and 18, September, 1963, is provided with supply spool diameter follower arm 11 having control pawl 12 at one end. Operating arm 13 is biased by spring 14 counterclockwise against pawl 12. When the diameter of supply spool 15 indicates exhaustion of the ribbon, pawl 12 becomes aligned with slot 16 in arm 13 allowing arm 13 to move counterclockwise against pivoted bail 17 that extends across the width of the typewriter. Bail 17 actuates switch 10 to indicate the ribbon end.

End Of Ribbon Sensing Device

To replace the exhausted ribbon with a new spool, capstan arm 18 is pivoted counterclockwise. Arm 18 through its right-hand extension, restores arm 13 clockwise and, through bellcrank 20 and connecting spring 21, restores sensing arm 11 clockwise to permit insertion of the new ribbon.
