Abstract

The nitration of 9-fluorenone to produce 2,4 7-trinitro-9-fluorenone is carried out using either a mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid or a mixture of concentrated nitric acid, a nitrate salt, and concentrated sulfuric acid. The 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone is prepared by the following process. To a cool nitrating mixture of 200 ml of concentrated sulfuric acid and either 300 ml of concentrated nitric acid or 50 grams of potassium nitrate in 200 ml of concentrated nitric acid are added 10 grams of 9-fluorenone. The reaction mixture is refluxed for from 4 to 6 hours and then is poured over ice. The product 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone is recovered by filtration and purified by recrystallization from acetic acid.
