Wire Unwrap Tool

This tool unwraps wire connections from printed circuit board pins without damage to either the boards or pins.

The unwrapping of wire connections is achieved by a tool 10 which can be hand-operated or driven by a power drill or other device. Tool 10 includes bit 12 that is slidably and rotatably received within barrel 14 by the interaction of set screw 16 and groove 18. Bit 12 has a wire engaging axially extending shoulder 19.

Barrel 14 has internal threaded section 20 and opposed wire engaging notches 22 and 23.

In operation, as shown in Step A, both barrel 14 and bit 12 are slid over the end of pin 24 that extends outwardly from printed circuit board 26. One notch 23 engages inner end 28 of wire connection 30. Shoulder 19 engages the outer end 32 of wire connection 30. In Step B, with barrel 14 held stationary, bit 12 is rotated and the convolutions of wire connection 30 expand into engagement with mating convolutions of threaded section 20. In subsequent steps, tool 10 is withdrawn, pulling wire connection 30 from pin 24. The freed wire connection 30 is removed from barrel 14 by sliding barrel 14 rearwardly over bit 12. Upon release, barrel 14 is returned by spring 34, mounted between stationary collar 36 and slidable collar 38. Damage to board 26 and pin 24 is prevented since barrel 14 does not rotate against board 26 and radial movement of bit 12 is prevented by barrel 14.
