Achieving Strip Track Registration

This device aligns flexible magnetic recording strips in a recording station to achieve accurate track registration.

The recording station includes cylindrical drum 1 mounted for rotation within housing 2 past fixed read-write transducer 3. Backing plate 4 closes off the rear of housing 2 and forms reference surface 5 for recording strip 6. Latch 7, which holds the strip on the periphery of drum 1, is located at a point on drum 1 between the center line of strip 6 and surface 5. Forward face 8 of latch 7 and a corresponding cutout 9 in strip 6 forms an angle with a perpendicular line on surface 5

When drum 1 is rotated within housing 2, a pulling force is transmitted from drum 1 through latch 7 to strip 6. Since latch 7 is located off the center line of strip 6 and since the force is transmitted through the angular surfaces of latch 7 and cutout 9 in strip 6, the pulling force exerted on strip 6 has both an axial and a lateral component. The amount of eccentricity of latch 7 is chosen such that the lateral component of the pulling force produces a uniform registration load at the edge of strip 6 against surface 5.
