Abstract

The balls, similar to those employed in the IBM SELECTRIC typewriters are modified to provide audio outputs. In the left-hand drawing, a plurality of oxide coated tracks is provided on the surface of the ball. A single spiral oxide coated track can be employed. A read-write head is employed to either record information on the ball or read information from it. In the right-hand drawing, the ball is cast with prerecorded grooves similar to those used on a phonograph record. A needle and cartridge are employed to read the ball.

In the left-hand drawing, a plurality of oxide coated tracks is provided on the surface of the ball. A single spiral oxide coated track can be employed. In operation, a single syllable can, for example, be recorded on the diagonal between positions usually occupied by two character type. The correct tilt and rotate can then be supplied to the access mechanism either by striking a key on a typewriter keyboard or under computer control. Once the ball is set to the desired position, the head is placed in contact with the ball and the latter is rotated at audio speed. The motion of the ball under the head produces the desired output.

The oxide coated arrangement in the left-hand drawing has the advantage that the recording can be changed. The grooved ball in the right-hand drawing has the advantage that the output can be stereo. With variable word-length information, two adjacent tracks can be employed. One contains the audio information. The other contains end-of-word marks.
