Positive reliable engagement, disengagement, and velocity profile is obtained by a single pawl dog clutch having a phasing pawl of the type shown in
U. S. Patent 3,212,610.

Continuously rotating ratchet 1 has inwardly projecting teeth 2 including leading and trailing edges 3 and 4 respectively that closely match the size and shape of corresponding surfaces on drive pawl 5. The closeness of pawl fit controls velocity varying backlash.

Inward tooth surface 6 is concentric with the rotational axis and parallel to outward surface 7 of pawl 5 to avoid partial engagement between them.

Phasing pawl 8 is shaped to prevent marginal engagement or disengagement of pawl 5. Upon engagement, cam surface 9 of pawl 8 strikes the edge of any tooth that could be marginally engaged and prevents engagement until the next tooth. Upon disengagement, pawl 8 does not move to controlling position until pawl 5 is completely free of a tooth 2. Pawl control ring 10 is biased by spring 11 to cam in and positively hold pawl 5 in engagement with teeth 2 throughout the operating cycle.
