Abstract

A process is provided for producing dielectric hydrophilic poly-para-xylylene surfaces employing bis-2-cyano-p-xylylene as a deposition material on a suitable substrate. Such dielectric material finds utility in magnetic storage devices. Dielectric films formed from this bis-2-cyano-p-xylylene contain long chains of xylyl rings substituted with cyano groups. By treatment with boiling water the dielectric surface of the bis-2-cyano-p-xylylene is rendered hydrophilic with carboxyl groups being formed during the hydrolysis. The hydrophilic rings are formed without rupturing the carbon skeleton of the bis-2-cyano-p-xylylene as is generally encountered.
