Abstract

This is a method of recording multibit characters on a recording medium by nonsymmetrical or irregularly spaced heads or a multielement head with irregularly spaced gaps. This system provides intelligible character sensing only if the recording head nonsymmetry is known.

Nonsymmetrical Recording Technique

This is a method of recording multibit characters on a recording medium by nonsymmetrical or irregularly spaced heads or a multielement head with irregularly spaced gaps. This system provides intelligible character sensing only if the recording head nonsymmetry is known.

Multigap head 12 records on tape 10, in 2-out-of-7 code in accordance with the table, the letters A through F at successive bit positions 14 on tracks 16. The gaps of head 12 are offset so that, for instance, instead of recording the two bits of the letter A in lateral alignment on tracks 16a and 16b, they are recorded offset by four bit positions in these two tracks.

A recording of the letters A through F in succession appears as at the left side of the tape, the bits being indicated by their respective letters. A correct sensing can be done only by a head with offset gaps, the same as those in head
12.
