The latter produces at every T1 mu s an output pulse the amplitude of which is proportional to the energy at the corresponding frequency. Delta modulator 3 codes the pulse train issued from detector 2. The coded signal is sampled every T1 mu s when detector 2 delivers one amplitude-modulated pulse.

From each pulse issued from detector 2 there corresponds a frequency band of the frequency spectrum to be analyzed. Consequently modulator 3 is controlled by multivibrator 4. The latter is under the control of zigzag and step signal generator 5.

Frequency analysis is performed step-by-step. In a basic T2 ms period, the first encoding is made at the lower frequency bandwidth and so on up to the Nth encoding at the higher frequency bandwidth. For the following T2 ms period of time, the frequency sweeping goes from the higher frequency bandwidth down to the lower one. Then a new T2 ms period begins during which the frequency sweeping goes again from the lower frequency bandwidth up to the higher one, and so on. The pulses produced by detector 2 are provided in a sequence corresponding to the zigzag signal, that is to say, pulses 1,2,3,...(n-1), n, (n- 1)...3,2,1. This zigzag frequency sweeping avoids delta modulation troubles should the signal be not zero starting.
