Automatic Tape Threading

Tape 10 from cartridge 11 is wrapped about drum and rotating head assembly 12 and into engagement with capstan 13.

When cartridge 11 is first loaded into the machine, tape 10 is stretched taut between guides 14 and 15 of cartridge 11. Threading arms 16...19 are then in position behind tape 10 in an opening in cartridge 11. Arms 16...19 are then rotated as shown about their respective axes, drawing tape 10 from cartridge 11 and wrapping it about drum 12. When arms 16...19 rotate suficiently to fully wrap tape 10 around drum 12, guides 20 and 21 sense to force the input and output sides of tape 10 into engagement with capstan 13. Arms 17 and 19 have then been rotated into a position to hold tape 10 extending between capstan 13 and cartridge 11 away from drum 12.

The device works in exactly the opposite fashion to unwrap the tape from drum 12. Devices are provided to wind one or both of the spindles 22 and 23 of cartridge 11 to pull tape 10 into cartridge 11.
