An arrangement for the word lines and common-bit sense lines coated with metal, formed from conductive magnetic material, of a magnetic storage device is provided. The speed of operation of the device is increased over those devices conventionally available.

That arrangement includes a word line with selectively positioned, dumbbell- shaped apertures, bit sites, spaced laterally along that word line. In quadrature there is a common-bit sense line, only one being shown, also having dumbbell- shaped aperatures selectively positioned. The apertures are so placed that their dumbbell portions of both the word and common-bit sense lines are orthogonal one to the other.

In operation, a word pulse is applied along the word line. Magnetic flux is thus induced to flow into one of the circular portions of a dumbbell aperture and out of the other. Eddy currents are confined to the perimeter of the aperture. To complete the writing of intelligence, a bit pulse is applied along the common-bit sense line concommitantly with the word pulse but out of phase with it. As with the word pulse, the magnetic flux flows through one of the circular members of the aperture and out of the other. Eddy currents are confined to the perimeter of the aperture. This gives rise to a net magnetic vector representing intelligence. Simultaneously eddy current effects are minimized and magnetic flux creepage between bit sites is reduced.
