Consumer Balance Check

A consumer checks his current balance in a financial merchandising services system account by this arrangement.

The consumer is issued an ID card which he uses in his daily financial transactions and which causes entry of the transactions into a record including his current open-to-buy balance. Table 10 of numbers is generated by the system for each day and published in a newspaper. The balance of every consumer is encoded in the table. Mask 12 has holes 14 in positions which expose only the numbers comprising the consumer's open-to-buy balance when mask 12 is laid on table 10. A plurality of holes 14 can either expose the entire balance at once or positioning of a corner can accord with a list of X and Y coordinates to expose each of the digits in sequence. Either mask 12 or a list of X and Y coordinates is distributed to each consumer periodically.

Table 10 can be shortened by employing reduction methods such as multi- entrant table look-up in which mask 12 includes a key X-Y which locates a pointer x-y within the table. The pointer then serves to locate mask 12 at a reference point in table 10 so that the proper balance is exposed.
