Abstract

Fly cutter 1 machines parallel grooves in a workpiece. It has cylindrical core 2 attached to sleeve 3, provided with holes for receiving cutting tools 4. Each tool 4 is held in place by clamp 5 that bears against a shoulder on tool 4. Thus, the clamping pressure on and tightness of each tool 4 is independent of those on the other tools. Tools 4 are located along a spiral path so shaped that only a few teeth contact the workpiece at any one time. Such contact occurs in nonadjacent grooves to minimize the forces and vibrations imparted to the workpiece by the machining process.
