Workpiece Reorientation Apparatus

This is a gravity-operated slide fixture adapted to rotate rectangular or square workpieces a quarter of a turn.

Fixture 10 is an inclined workpiece slide with a 90 degrees bend. Workpieces 12 are metered from the upper portion of slide 14 to bend 16, by resilient wheel 18 in frictional engagement with workpieces 12. The latter slide downwardly on slide 14 to bend 16 and, then, off in a transverse direction on lower slide 20. The change in orientation is indicated by arrows 22 on workpieces 12. At bend 16, restrictor guide 24 stabilizes workpieces 12. A kicker element 26, made of nonre silient material, absorbs the kinetic ene rgy and prevents rebounding.

Device 10 is particularly adapted to reorient square ceramic substrates of electronic modules during intermediate stages of manufacturing. Device 10 can have a plurality of parallel slides to handle trays having multiple substrate receiving grooves.
