Film Adhesion Test Apparatus

This device is used to measure the adhesive strength of a film or coating. The device is a support for the specimen which virtually eliminates the bending moment and restricts the force applied to break the bond to one of tension.

Small dot 12 of the coating material to be tested is applied to the central portion of substrate 14 and cured. Small rivot 16 is then soldered or otherwise adhered to dot 12. The resultant substrate, dot, and rivot specimen assembly is then placed in receiving slot 20 in ball 22 of mounting device 10 as indicated in
13. The edges of substrate 14 are in abutment with surfaces 24. Mounting device 10 is clamped to a suitable base. A force is applied to rivot 16 in the general direction indicated by the arrows 26 in A.

The force required to break dot 12 from substrate 14 is noted and used to calculate the adhesive strengths of the coating under test on a per unit area basis.

Since ball segment support 22 permits universal rotational movement of the specimen prior to application of the breaking force, any bending movement, resulting from misalignment of the force and device 10, and misalignment of rivot 16 on substrate 14 are eliminated. The device supports the specimen so that the interface of dot 12 and substrate 14 lies on the major diameter of support 22.
