Abstract

Precision Delay Line

The delay line is particularly suitable for providing a sequence of timing signals for a memory. To start a timing sequence, a driver is turned on to apply a pulse to the input of the delay line. Circuits connected to taps on the delay line turn on and off as the pulse travels down the line. These circuits produce timing pulses having timed leading and trailing edges.

The delay line has the electrical property in that it filters the substantially square input pulse to produce at its taps a pulse having an appreciable rise time. This rise time is selected to be about equal to the time of the spacing between adjacent taps on the line. The circuits connected to the taps have voltage threshold levels at which they respond to the pulse on the line.

These threshold levels are adjustable. When the delay line is assembled, the thresholds of the circuits are individually adjusted so that each circuit produces its output pulse at the selected time. With this feature, the delay line can be adjusted very accurately to the selected timing sequence.
