Abstract

The edges of magnetic tape 11 are cut in a slightly wavy pattern, exaggerated in the drawings, most likely caused by the runout of circular slitters used to cut the tapes to width. Guide 12 maintains such tape in accurate and constant lateral alignment. Guide 12 includes fixed edge guide 13, base 14 and spring-loaded edge guide 15. Guides 13 and 15 are of length greater than the pitch of the waviness in the tape edge to prevent tape 11 from shifting from side to side. In the preferred case, one guide 13 is fixed while the other guide 15 is spring-loaded, pushing tape 11 against guide 13. Base 14 is curved to impart lateral stiffness to tape 11. A convex curve can be used as an alternative to the concave curve shown.
