Abstract

The film sandwich is used in either a photodigital or photoimage application. The film sandwich comprises a transparent base, a suitable carrier for diazo salt and coupler along with inhibitor, a silver halide emulsion that can be stripped from the diazo layer, an encapsulated monobath developer-fixer, and tear strip.

Photomaterial for Direct Input from Document to File

The film sandwich is used in either a photodigital or photoimage application. The film sandwich comprises a transparent base, a suitable carrier for diazo salt and coupler along with inhibitor, a silver halide emulsion that can be stripped from the diazo layer, an encapsulated monobath developer-fixer, and tear strip.

Exposure of the silver layer to a document or electron beam produces a latent image in the silver. The encapsulated monobath is then released to develop and fix the film by moving the film back and forth over a roller or other similar device. Exposure of the diazo layer by UV light through the fixed silver film mask then produces a latent diazo image. The silver mask is then stripped from the diazo layer. The film is moved to a high-pressure anhydrous ammonia developer station where the diazo film is developed.

An advantage in a photodigital application is that a fast low silver content emulsion can be used in recording. The Dmax high contrast is obtained from the Dmax of the diazo film. Advantages obtained in a photoimage application are that the diazo layer can function as an antihalation coating for the silver film if proper silver sensitive emulsions are used. Additionally, intimate contact between the two films is achieved.
