Abstract

The electroluminescent device can be turned on and off by a low-voltage device such as a transistor. The device includes body 2 of conventional electroluminescent material with two terminals 3 and 4. When a high voltage is applied to terminals 3 and 4, the device electroluminesces. Terminal 4 is transparent and light shines through this terminal. The device includes third terminal 5 that is transparent and is located within level 2 near transparent terminal 4. When the device is ope rating, only a small voltage appears between terminals 4 and 5. A transistor is connected between terminals 4 and 5. When the transistor is turned on, the electrical gradient between terminals 4 and 5 becomes zero.
