Abstract

Variable typewriter ribbon feed is selected by a characteristically coded ribbon cartridge 10. Ribbon feed mechanism 11, as shown in IBM Technical Disclosure Bulletin, Vol. 8, No. 11, page 1627, includes control plate 12. The latter can be positioned to variably limit the feed determining stroke of clutch drive arm 13 from power mechanism not shown. Cartridge 10 is inserted, as shown by the broken line, and pivoted counterclockwise to its final, full line position. Opening 14 is present in cartridges containing a ribbon requiring a greater than minimum feed increment. Opening 14 can have any of a plurality of vertical lengths. The stepped end of connecting rod 15 senses opening 14 and thus pivots plate 12 to present an appropriate stroke limit surface 16 to the path of arm 13.

Automatic Ribbon Feed Selector

Cartridges containing ribbons requiring a short feed increment contain no opening 14. Such cartridges drive rod 15 fully to the left and thus pivot plate 12 to the short feed position.
