Abstract

In small cavity 1 at the rear end of spring-loaded piston 2, a pair of electrodes 3 is arranged. By spark discharge, the pressure in cavity 1 is rapidly increased, driving piston 2. The latter is stopped by opening 4 in cylinder 5 in which piston 2 is guided. Opening 4 is released by piston 2 after it travels the distance required. Movable center portion 6 of cavity 1 performs two functions. First, it allows piston 2 to return to its original position. Secondly, it allows the ionized air in cavity 1 to be exchanged. For maximum efficiency, cavity 1 is as small as possible.
