Abstract

In the type of electrophotography in which the photoconductor is reused, the electrostatic latent images are developed on the surface of the photoconductor. These developed toner images are then transferred to paper. Not all of the toner transfers and there is a residue on the photoconductor. Consequently, after transfer, this residue toner must be removed before the photoconductor can be reused.

In the type of electrophotography in which the photoconductor is reused, the electrostatic latent images are developed on the surface of the photoconductor. These developed toner images are then transferred to paper. Not all of the toner transfers and there is a residue on the photoconductor. Consequently, after transfer, this residue toner must be removed before the photoconductor can be reused.

A cleaning system for removing this residual toner comprises supply roll 1 of cleaning web 2. The latter is fed between roller 3 and the electrophotographic drum. Next, web 2 is brought into contact with wetting roller 4 disposed in a container of cleaning solution 5. Now, the wet web 2 makes contact with the electrophotographic drum by passing between the drum and roller 6 and is wound up on takeup roll 7.

In this arrangement, the wet portion of web 2 first makes contact with the electrophotographic drum and loosens and removes any residual toner on the photoconductive surface. The photoconductive surface then is dried and polished by the cleaned dry portion of the web 2. If desired, cleaning solution 5 can be either applied periodically or continuously depending on how fast the residual toner accumulates.
