Abstract

The drawing shows a desk with a linkage, which translates the movement of pulling the top, into forces which automatically bring the top to a tilted position. Top 1 at the left of the desk can be flat with the desk for use as a supporting or writing surface. Movement of top 1 outward, as shown, causes top 1 to be forced up by arm 3. Top 1 is pivoted by hinge 5 to horizontal bottom member 7 which extends into the desk. Rack 8 is a part of the stationary portion of the desk.

Mechanized Desk or Cabinet Top

The drawing shows a desk with a linkage, which translates the movement of pulling the top, into forces which automatically bring the top to a tilted position. Top 1 at the left of the desk can be flat with the desk for use as a supporting or writing surface.

Movement of top 1 outward, as shown, causes top 1 to be forced up by arm 3. Top 1 is pivoted by hinge 5 to horizontal bottom member 7 which extends into the desk. Rack 8 is a part of the stationary portion of the desk.

Thus, outward movement of top 1 causes relative movement between rack 8 and gear 9. Rotation of gear 9 is translated through rod 11 to gear 13, where it is operative on the rack 15 which is integral with arm 3. Arm 3 is in that manner forced up an amount directly proportional to the outward movement of top 1.

Top 1 is held firmly for use as a tilted working surface by arm 3 and by horizontal member 7. The movement away from the desk automatically provides leg room under member 7 for the user of top 1 in its tilted position.
