Abstract

This system checks all major operation areas of a terminal which is adapted to transmit data and generates check characters from the data transmitted. Data is generated and transmitted through the terminal in the usual manner. Then the check function created by it is processed back through the terminal as though it were a received character. Thus the check character can be observed locally.

Circulating Test System for Terminal

This system checks all major operation areas of a terminal which is adapted to transmit data and generates check characters from the data transmitted. Data is generated and transmitted through the terminal in the usual manner. Then the check function created by it is processed back through the terminal as though it were a received character. Thus the check character can be observed locally.

The sequence of operation is indicated by the numbered blocks in the drawing. A character is generated or read by the normal transmitting structures and stepped into read buffer 1. From the latter, a character is transferred to transmit serializer 3 and a normal serializing and transmission operation is performed. As a normal incident to the process of transmitting, a check character is generated in check character register 5. Since this is a test system, the transmitted signals can be inhibited through degating circuit 4.

After completion of a test transmission cycle including one or more characters as just described, the terminal is switched from the transmit to the receive mode. Preferably, this is done manually so an elaborate structure to count the number of characters transmitted and to automatically control the system need not be provided.
