Tape Lifter and Guide Mechanism

The device engages and disengages a magnetic tape and establishes a guide path. The device also maintains constant contact pressure of the tape with respect to a magnetic read-write head.

Tape 1 is guided over tape bed 2 past head 3 as in drawings A and B. Bed 2 is mounted for reciprocal engaging and disengaging movement in fixed guide block 4. Bed 2 is attached to post 5 by a trunnion connection that includes rod 6. A loose pivoting fit of hole 7 and post 5 permits conformity of bed 2 with the surface of head 3 at a distance established by stop studs 8 and 9 as in drawing
B.

Bed 2 is kept engaged with head 3 by spring tension exerted by spring 10 between block 4 and bellcrank 11 that is connected to the lower extremity of post
5. The latter is adjustable by threads 5a. Bed 2 is disengaged by energizing solenoid 12 to rotate bellcrank 11 clockwise against the tension of spring 10. Guide spring 13 assists in guiding tape 1 between studs 8 and 9. When engaged, tape 1 passes over bed 2 with a slight bow which insures good contact pressure across the entire width of tape 1.
