Counter Control

The system is controlled by a counter that counts forward by an n increment and backward by N increments. N is a multiple of n. Increment n can represent a data bit. Increment N represents a character, a word, a block or other data group.

In the upper drawing, printer 1 is connected for input and output with memory 2 through logic 3. Printer 1 has keyboard 4 for entry of data at addresses in memory 2 determined by counter 5. Data is supplied to print head 6 during output for printing on document 7.

Counter 5 has an increment counting section 5a and a group counting section 5b. Assuming each character has eight data bits, the latter are entered in memory 2 by incremental n counting action of section 5a as shown in the timing sequence. At octal 10, 20, etc., section 5b is incremented to define a character count N. If correction of an entered character is required, section 5b counts in reverse by octal N increments to control accessing of characters for re-entry. Such is shown at the end of the timing sequence.
