Abstract

The clutch has a replaceable insert that is provided at a point of wear and that simplifies repair. The input to clutch assembly 1, drawing A, is primary arbor 2 driven through shaft 3 from extremity 3a by a motor not shown. The output is main drive sleeve 4 with load elements such as cams 5 and 6. Input and output in assembly 1 are coupled by clutch spring 7.

Wear Insert for Clutch

The clutch has a replaceable insert that is provided at a point of wear and that simplifies repair. The input to clutch assembly 1, drawing A, is primary arbor 2 driven through shaft 3 from extremity 3a by a motor not shown. The output is main drive sleeve 4 with load elements such as cams 5 and 6. Input and output in assembly 1 are coupled by clutch spring 7.

The latter and sleeve latch 12 are clamped to sleeve 4 by clamp 8. Lead sleeve 9, when latched by armature 10, holds spring 7 expanded and the clutch is disengaged. When armature 10 is moved out of the way, sleeve 9 permits spring 7 to contract, it engages arbor 2 and sleeve 4 is thereby driven.

The periphery 4a of a prior version of sleeve 4, drawing B, and portion of spring 7, adjacent arbor 2, have a tendency to wear. To simplify overhaul, sleeve 4 is shortened and is provided with wear insert 11, having key portion 11a, as in drawings A, C, and D, and aperture 11b through which shaft 3 passes. Insert 11 is readily accessible for replacement by removal of surrounding parts. Drive sleeve 4, which is not so accessible, normally need not be replaced. Spring 7 maintains insert 11 concentric with sleeve 4.
